It is amazing that we can feel such emotion for a simple four-footed creature, and shed more tears for him than we can for his two-legged counterparts.

They touch that very secret and private part of our hearts. That vulnerable part, which is also the only part capable of unconditional love--to give and receive.

And when they leave us, we feel a loss that cannot be filled by ordinary means or the sympathy of well-meaning friends. It is a loss we personally carry, because we cared that much. They depended on us to care for and about them. And they gave back in kind.

They leave indelible paw prints on our hearts. They loved us, as we did them. Treasure that. It was the truest and purest of gifts ...given and received.
